David grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and received his B.S. degree in chemistry in 1980 from Marquette University. After working in Denver, Colorado as a chemist in the plastics and materials science industry, David received his J.D. degree in 1987 from the University of Wisconsin. He joined Kolisch Hartwell in that year, and in 1994 became a partner. He is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and admitted to practice law in the following courts: Oregon, 1988; the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, 1988; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the International Trademark Association, and the Oregon Patent Law Association, for which he served as Secretary-Treasurer in 1989–1990 and as President in 1990–1991.
